Personal Reflections on Prepare Me Theory in Pediatric Setting

By: Mariecar L. Manalo RN

Prepare Me

The PREPARE ME Theory is actually new to us especially it was not tackled during our undergraduate studies. Frankly speaking, the concept of this theory was not fully understood until I relate to an experience with a cancer patient 3 years ago when I was still working in the Philippines.

It was a busy weekend inside the Emergency Room when she came along. When we were trying to do insert a cannula to her, she opted to refuse. We tried to convince her about the procedure and she insisted not to do anything to her. She still pursued on her admission to the hospital but we didn’t fully understand why she insisted to be there when she doesn’t want anything to be done to her.

On the course of her confinement, the only procedure that we did was seeing her during the end-of-shift rounds. One day, I had the chance to talk to her. She shared her beautiful moments before she had undergone the therapies and the misery of life while on therapy. The only thing she wanted in her life was to live peacefully and to hear songs while she is still living. One day, on her birthday, we offered a song to her and made her day truly worthwhile. We saw her laughter and smiles on her face on that day. Three days after her birthday, she passed away.

We can truly say that the PREPARE ME Theory is important to our profession since this will serve as a guide (framework) on rendering care to cancer patients. Though the framework shows a palliative approach of nursing care to patients, but this gives a big impact on the integrity of the person.
I really hope that someday, I am going to encounter this situation again and intervene using this framework.
